Jonathan Beagle’s 100 Point Scoring System.

Some of you may have noticed that in the last few months, I have started to use a different scoring system to in the past.

It is a scoring system whereby I use all 100 points, and it is near on impossible to gain a full 100 points. You are probably asking why?

My simply answer is two fold:

1) Seeming score inflation amongst the major critics.
2) I have never understood why a wine should get 50 points just for turning up, a further 10 for being the correct colour and more points for being… Well…wine!. At school and university I always had to work hard for every point, and I studied many subjective subjects like Politics and Literature. Very much like wine.

It is however a bit difficult for people to read a glowing note, and then see a score of 60! We have been consumed by the 100 point (really 20 point system). So what follows is an explanation of how it works.

0-29/100 I wouldn’t bother with this.
30-49/100 Decent but I wouldn’t buy a case.
50-59/100 Good wine showing grape and terroir character.
60-69/100 An excellent example of a wine from this grape, region or country.
70-85/100 One of the very best wines that this region has to offer.
86-100/100 One of the very best wines that I have ever tried, period.

You may ask therefore why don’t I use a 10 point scale. The problem is this:

Whilst there may be many wines in the 6-7 range, I like some more than others, and much like a university degree paper in the UK, one can gain a 2:1 but you can do it with a 65 or a 67. I liked the 67 just that little bit better.

And that ladies and gentlemen is the explanation for my new scoring system.

  1. you can have whatever system you like. What bothers me is, why do you think anyone should care and how on earth do you think you can rate wines that accurately? you should learn to appreciate and understand wines first. and if after that you absolutely have to ‘score’ them, though God knows why you’d want to, at least do it sensibly.

    • Thank you for making a snide comment from behind the safety of anonymity. It is such a pleasant place to be. I put this up at the request of others who on occasion would read my notes and ask me questions when I forgot to add an explanation.

      Assuming I know nothing about wine is also verging on rude. If you don’t like my notes, system or think I know nothing about wine, then you don’t have to read what I write. Just because I don’t conform to the “I’m a million points on that…” Brigade doesn’t make my opinion on a wine any more or less valid.

      Wine is a journey and no one claims to ever fully understand it; please come back when you have tasted some Japanese, Georgian, Armenian and Turkish wines in detail… Not even the most experienced claim to know everything, and I’m happy to acknowledge when I’m wrong but plenty of people respect my opinions and like talking to me about wine. That includes winemakers and some wine critics who know me, and a good few merchants. One thing I don’t do is pretend to be important… These are my own views and no one should feel obliged to read them or compelled to acknowledge them.

      If you had something genuine to say, as oppose to trolling, then perhaps you would have the kind-heartedness to use your real name. This is the first and last time that I accept a comment by someone without a valid email or either their own name or company name.

  2. I like your approach. While I don’t personally score wines in points terms (although I suppose I grade them across about 14 different levels), the traditional points system – starting at 50/60 – is utterly bonkers. I wish my exam marks had started at 50!

    • That is one of the reasons I decided to experiment… Whilst a lesser wine can take on a big wine for quality. Occhipinti SP68 Rosso is fabulous but it isn’t as good a wine as day Lynch-Bages 02 even. I’d like to have some bigger differentiation than 2-3 points but still show the quality of the Occhipinti, and at the end of the day it is about conveying an emotive feeling as well. I do think there are too many of follow the points to fail to read the note which is actually far more important…
